You might remember the Water Margin from 70s and 80s TV. 108 renegade warriors fought for the poor against the rich, in this epic tale that reminds westerners of Robin Hood. This is one of the heroes, known as Kinhyoshi Yorin in Japanese (Yang Lin in the original Chinese) and we love his swagger!
He’s wearing a straw raincoat, carrying a naginata-like weapon and sword while he strides through the autumn marshes, no doubt on an important mission for his group of rebels.
This is an Utagawa-style woodcut, one of the most prolific schools of Ukiyo-e. This work was done by Kuniyoshi, a prominent student of that school. He produced this as part of his “108 heroes of the Suikoden” series, which made him hugely famous, and this is our favourite from that series!
